Steve Pryor

Practice Co- Owner - ELTHAM VETERINARY PRACTICE

Professional Bio

Steve Pryor is current Chair of the Veterinary Business Group (VBG) and Co-owner of award winning Eltham Veterinary Practice, in Eltham, Victoria.

Since graduating from the University of Melbourne Veterinary School in 1985, and starting his career in the Western District of Victoria, then NSW Riverina and then Murwillumbah on the far north NSW Coast, Steve has always worked in private practice.

During those years Steve worked as a mixed practice vet, but became increasingly small animal oriented with a strong interest in surgery, and towards the end of his Murwillumbah stay, he studied for his MANZCVS exam in Small Animal Surgery.

Steve moved back to Melbourne with his family in late 1998, and took a job soon after at Eltham Veterinary Practice where he still practices, becoming an owner within the first few years.

Since the day Steve first embraced practice ownership over 30 years ago, he has had a passion for business generally and Veterinary business in particular. Eltham Veterinary Practice (current practice) has grown from one to five vets over the last 10 years, and Steve puts this down to having a great team culture, developing staff wherever possible, offering efficient, friendly customer service, and having strong personal relationships with clients.

Apart from co-managing Eltham Veterinary Practice and being the practice surgeon, Steve really enjoys being part of the VBG, an organisation that helps Veterinary businesses progress from cottage industry to professionally managed, caring and profitable organisations. He believes we are lucky to work in a great industry, but that a lot of Veterinary businesses could be better run. He thinks that an overall industry improvement in leadership and business skills would restore the reputation of the Veterinary vocation to that where participants are happy, fulfilled and can live comfortably.
